I am new to African cichlids and was wondering which type and how many fish I can keep in a 55 g.

I am looking for a mix of most colorful and largest number of fish possible for this tank.

If you want color you could probably do a small all male peacock tank. I've never kept one though, only Mbuna with peacocks mixed in, so more input on specifics would be needed.

tangenika is always fun. Not as much color but what they lack in that will be made up in personality!

the options are wide open. Find a few you like and we can advise you on tank mates from there!

Here is a list of what I was thinking.

red zebra
johanni
peacock
brichardi
cobalt
buffalo head

I really like frontosas but I know that is not happening in a 55.

I've tried mixing Mbuna with peacocks in a 48 gallon. I don't think the extra width on a 55 gallon would be enough to make it work, but maybe. Currently I have 6 yellow labs and 3 acei and they get along well.
