just a little food for thought . . . there was a time when scientist thougth that animals are all color blind. then we heard that some species can actually perceive colors in various shades of grey tones. then we've were told that some can actually see crude forms colors in. we also have heard that certain colors can have an effect on the emotions. of humans and animals. some colors are said to have a calming effect while others are said to create excitement. who really knows? i've never heard any studies being done on fish recognizing colors. i really don't think that substrate color matters. rbp's will be rbp's.

spot on cheers for that

would i be right in thinking that the darker the substrate the more colourful the RBP's?

It's largely personal preference. The darker the substrate the more your P's pigments will darken up. I think a sort of reddish-orange colored sand is natural to the amazon, but a lot of P keepers use black sand to keep the Ps colored up.

To get the best "natural" colors. Do this.....sand colored gravel with lots of plants and this is what you will get.....greens, yellow, browns, and oranges.

Thanks. imeo fish being color blind is a bunch of bull. Male fish are always wayyyy more colorful. They are not more colorful to please us, there is a reason for this. They are more colorful to attract a mate. Any animal that has a gender color difference is not a color blind animal imo.
