What substrate for Umbees?

How big are they? I always start of with blue/black gravel to help them color up then I can move to more natural gravels. If you want to start of with natural then stay with darker stuff and go with bright blue background.

They are 1/5" to 2" right now. I have them in a 180 gal with pool filter sand. I heard it better to keep Umbees in darker colors to prevent them from washing out so when I move them to the 220 I'm picking up this week I want to change to gravel.

That is correct. Light substrate will wash them out making them not color up till they are much larger, 10"+ darker is def better for umbee juvies

I never knew that! I've got my 2 inch first Umbee in a bare tank for cleanliness. Bad move?

A few flat stones of varied colors may help and still be pretty clean.
Perhaps colored paper stuck to the bottom outside of the glass, if it is accessible, might also work.

I can put dark paper on the bottom, I've got some slate, I've got some beach pebbles (the 2 inch stones)...any particular approach seem best? I'm setting up a tank for my first dovii tomorrow so I'm up for anything!
