For those of you who have bred piranhas, I was wondering what substrate was used to do this. Gravel? Sand? Artificial? Thanks:)

i have seen a vid of some reds breeding and it was on gravel and my old reds dug a nest and tried a few times but the caribe just would not let them get on with it.
i have also seen some set ups with a matting/plant substrate on one side and gravel on the other and they spawned in the matting side of the tank.

The best thing to use is a coconut fiber mat its about 1.5 inches thick it comes on a roll. Cut a piece about 12 inch square. The male will bite at it quit a bit until he is happy with it. the mature male will always guard the mat. One way to sex you piranhas is before a feeding of witch a little time has gone by you can see there bellies the females usually are wider scene they are caring eggs. When they spawn on the mat you will know the first sign is that the male is the only one the mat some of the other piranhas will be hiding and everyone in the tank should be nicked up pretty good also. the eggs are hard to see on these black mats, however they can be seen with a flashlight. once you know there are eggs on the mat take the mat out and put it in a small tank 20 gal with a heater and a temp of about 84. one trick that i do to get them to spawn is water changed jack the heat up to 84 or so, that works very well. Good luck!!
