Just curious at to you guys thought on keeping Aro's I know everyone is a bit different. I'm thinking of a Silver also. And by get one I mean for Life, not a grow out tank. And I'm thinking Glass over Arcylic FYI.
I was going to say the Amazon Basin if you have space for it. I think ^ this sums it up though.
In a nut shell, everyone is going to have their own opinion and everyone else is wrong. I have seen a three foot silver in a 55g (Asian restaraunt of course) but the arow needs to swim and turn around. Arows are of the most flexible fish and can turn in a fraction of their body length. Still, they should have as large of a tank that you can afford and have space for. Anything over 250g will suffice but the larger the better. Any argument given why a given tank is too small can be trumped by saying that a bigger tank is required all the way up to the Amazon Basin. Really, there is no definative answer to one tank size.
we kept a pair of silver aro's in a 6x2.5x3 with a fairly large sum.
generally kept on their own with minial decor for lots of swimming space they did fine and got to a good 3foot each, but at that point they started to get a bit narsty and nibbling on each other.
i would think.. IN MY OPINION you'd just about get away with a 6x3x3 bu ideally 8x4x3 upward.
or the amazon basin.
Once I saw a ~3 foot aro in a hex tank that was probably 90g. The aro had to swim in a constant circle and its head damn near touched its tail. Oh and there were 3-4 cichlids in there too, RD's or midas, can't remember which.
I would think 2' wide might be a little on the tight side, for me minimum would be 6x2.5xwhatever deep, though I'd say 8x3 or more would be more ideal.
If you are truely talking for life then you are looking at eventually housing a fish that will be 36" or more in length. To grow that large may take 8 - 10 years though. Although silvers are very flexable I think having only 24" for a 36" fish to turn is pushing it. Also both my aros like to face the front glass during feeding.
I would bump up the 240 gallon to a 300 (96" x 30" x 24") and that would be good for a very long time, maybe for life(you'd have to determine that once you aro got 36"). Best bet is the 375 gallon (96" x 36" x 24") this would be perfect.
