Depends on what fish cold water fish should be kept at cold temps tropical fish should be kept around 84 my tanks at 84 and my fish thrive in it but the warmer the water the less air so keep that in mind

also depends on the temp outside if u live where its hot example florida. i wouldent even bother with a heater your water will stay at 78-84
