On a boat!
I have plans to setup a tank in my garage, but am a bit afraid of the high temperatures that the water could see. My friend's tank has seen 90F in his garage tank.

What temperature is too high for our rays? What is typically used to cool the water down? I've heard of fans blowing across the water or sump and chillers (not a viable option for me).

Thanks, All!!

Another buddy of mine kept his cool using a lot of surface agitation and aeration. I'd have to see what temp he was able to maintain.

i know a guy who keeps his at 88 degrees..personally i think its too high but the rays grow fast in those temps.

I have had three different garage set ups and my garage can hit 100 plus degree temps in summer. For the first two setup I used a 9 inch fan to blow across water surface and temp stayed around 78-80 degrees with the help of a small heater to keep from getting too cold. My new setup has a 4 inch exhaust fan instead of a fan. The whole concept is to help speed evaporation to keep surface temp down.

You need to be careful with evaporation, yes it cools the water but only pure water evaporates, of you do not water change enough then the water gets harder and harder....this works for marines as they thrive on it but not good in rays tanks if the water is already on the hard side.

I would set up a chiller at 89 so it only comes on in extremes, add some ventilation along with lots of aeration and insulate well as long as the structure can breathe.
