What the hell is with people on ebay? Outrageous prices for FHs with made up names! I wonder if people actually pay for fish like yorkipoo, tweedledumb, givemeabreak , etc. . . and say they are rare! Just venting. 600 for a 50 buck fish. . .maybe
With the goldfish, at least, unless they are 6" long or so, you can't know what they are - they're body shapes and colors change as they mature. Real black comets must be bred back to a true black strain of goldfish (bubbleeye, or I think oranda also works) every few generations, or they lose their inky color, but many comets are black when young. (I thought I got a black hibuna once, but it turned golden orange at 5".)I've seen more...
so for one, at petsmart, in the tank that they're selling what they were calling 'sarasa comets', (i mean yeah they're sarasa comets but...) I see what is supposed to be a rare konoko hibuna goldfish. (in other words a common goldfish with a red and white pattern with clusters of red dots) on other places it would be sold for $200 plus... well i found it for like $3.
you'd never believe what i've seen at petsmarts... better yet the one near where i live.
weird things that are normally expensive that i've seen:
- baby veiled oscars
- lemon oscars
- cryptoheros nanoluteus
- jet black comet goldfish
- konoko goldfish
- varieties of endler's livebearers
- various species of silver dollars
just depends on who's selling and who's buying.
I think my petsmart is better and gets a more interesting selection of fish and other animals because the people who work there actually keep the animals that they're selling, and take care of them correctly.
Why is that worse than $650+/ea. for Nankin goldfish oryou really want to complain about "designer " pets.... read this .

BDs? Silkies and such always cost more and less eggs then Rhode Island Reds or Leghorns.
