what do you guys think is making my silver so jumpy
in the last week or so all he does is jump
he is now missing scales and has tore up the side of his jaw pretty bad
and this morning he broke my glass lid.
tank mates are
rck 12"
ck 11"
14" tsn
and a 12" common pleco

aro is 21" long

i know they need a bigger tank which they will get in less than a month
fishroom starts in 2 weeks

any thoughts
you think the ck's are messing with him
if so they are out the aro is my prize fish

mike

p.s. he has never jumped before
always cool calm and collected

Have you checked for stray current in your tank? Maybe one of the heaters is messed up.

I would also check the water parameters to double check that everything is ok. I think the fish you have with him should leave him alone....but I'm not sure.

Mine has been more jumpy than usual in the past month, even b4 the great tank change. I just up the Ketapang/Almond Leaf blackwater and he calms down. It seems to coincide with growth spurts. I guess it's an Aro thing, but definaltely check params if you haven't.

My last one was pretty mellow and only a sudden aggression of a tankmate would set him off. There's so many factors, it's hard to pinpoint. I'd use the process of elimination, checking temp, params, tankmates, etc. Mine loves
to sit above a bubbly airstone, and he zig zags thru a bubble curtain.

I always make sure his special area is the same. Current, plants, etc. all can affect them, but I think it's any Aro's perogative to be jumpy, he has a reputation to maintain!

i think they get jump as they age towards the bigger side. he should stop once he passes the 2ft mark. try to make sure the clown knivez aint pickin on him, some ck's are kinda agressive. i've seen my old ck go at it with my smaller aro

thanks to all
i did a water change 2 days ago and all params were perfect but i will check again
i haven't seen my ck's bugging him but who knows
i don't think there is a stray current or i would of felt it when i put my arm in there to fetch my glass lid

he has never been jumpy before and has always swam up to the glass whenever i walk up, begging for food just like my cichlids but now he runs away.
not sure but if my aro does something stupid and dies i might have to quit the hobby

thanks again
mike

one more question
is it worth the risk to do a 100% waterchange

just a thought

mike

That would probably make matters worse to be honest mike. Perhaps a couple days of 50%?

i see no need for a 100%wc, some aros are just jumpy. my old aro loved to jump 2-3 times a day, would scalp himself weekly, just his personality. i would get a top made out of 1/4"+ acrylic and weight it to avoid the big plunge though. study your tank for a while to try and find a reason for the jumpiness if you can to be on the safe side.
