WHAT THE HECK ARE MARKET PRAWNS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe "market prawns" is just a generic term for shrimp or prawns that are purchased at the supermarket. You won't actually see them labeled that way. They're usually just labeled "shrimp" or "prawns" or something like that. I buy my "market prawns" from an Asian supermarket for around $3.50 a pound w/out heads but with shells, legs, and tails. They're usually about 3+ inches long. They also sell them w/ heads and everything on or deshelled headless, but I usually go for the headless w/ shells to give my puffer something to chomp on without all the excess fats and oils in the head and organs.

are the shells digestable?
Not by us, for fish they are roughage.

some fish dont like the shells on.....my dempsey does but my piranha doesnt so try both ways

I will reiterate, do NOT shop where "white people" shop. Hit the nearest Asian supermarket. You'll be rewarded with beautiful raw headless shrimp for less than 1/2 the price of suburban supermarkets. :)
