Any thoughts or opinions on canister filters, I’m setting my first big tank (125 freshwater) I’ve had smaller tanks for the last 30 some years, 10’s and 20’s. I want to go canister so that everything is in the stand out of site, but the more I read the harder its getting. Money is a factor so Eheim Professional 3e Filte is out of the running but some of the other Eheim aren’t, such as the 2250 if I can fin one at a reasonable price and I like the 2217.
But than I look just a little all the others pop up the Fluval FX5, Magnum 350, RENA Filstar XP 4 and Penn Plax Cascade 1200. Any input from experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

of the listed filters i have and use, mag 350's, Fx-5's, and a 2217 eheim. out of all my fav is the Fx-5, followed by the eheim, and i've never loved my magnum 350's. Fx-5 i recomend highly. power house filters, very effiecent i fill mine up will all sorts of bio media's.

i have an xp4 and it is great, but not worth the money. depending on stocking i would use 2 ac110's as mechanichal filters and a canister for your bio filter, cans dont make great mech filters and are a real pain to clean weekly. i hear good things bout the eheim 2217's and the price is great on em.

whats your stock list do want to upgrade and still use the filter. depends on what you want done :)

Starting pretty much from scratch, I’m looking to do a community with medium plants, haven’t even decided on substrate yet leaning towards Flourite or maybe some mixture there of (any suggestion or pictures on the site that I can get some ideas from) I like schoolers and with six feet of tank that could look nice, just thoughts for now. Thanks for your help and time.

ok then you want somthing more for mech try uhhhh i'm not sure lol try somthing with high GPH and use more mech stuff then bio :)

When it comes to cleaning, I would say the rena series. Close the quick valve, tank the filter to your (insert where you clean in your house here), clean and tank back... no priming.

When it comes to longevity, I have never had a problem with a Rena, but never had a fluval without it having some sort of mechanical problem. For a tank this size 2 XP4's would do a great job.
