I live in SoCal and am planning on building an in ground pond. What would I do about rain? Would I just let the pond overflow? Would the water be harmful?

ive always let rain water fill my pond with nothing bad ever happening,

thou im not sure about SoCal rain. that place isnt exactly the cleanest air and water around...lol

you could always test some rain water and see how they measure up to the existing pond.

:iagree: (there that ought to lend alot of credibilty to Gr8KarmaSF :grinno: )

How big are you gonna go 1-2 acres? or settle for something you can see accross?

And plan for a overflow drain for your pond that is screened so your critters can't escape.

Make sure the rain water isn't running off a roof or from trees, it can introduce chemicals and fungus/molds to the pond in large quantities.

Just do some pre-planning and you'll be very happy with your pond and may be looking for a spot for a second one.

When it rains , I mostly let it rain. You , and neighbors are the biggest danger, that is herbcide, insecticide, etc used in the yard. If you ignore the part in the book , like I did , and build it where runoff can get in. Floating plants overflow out but the fish seem to go down during rain ; I have had a few swordtails go exploring a few hours after thr rain ends and get out.

My friend put his pond right above his their drywell where they pour lots of nasty stuff. He also lives on a coastal plain, so the only worry is the water level rising and then swim into the hole where the driwell is at. In my pond, I just leave 2-4 inches not full so that even a lot of rain doesn't mess with the pond. Worst comes to worst, I pop out to the waterfall hose and water the plants while it rains.

I think rain would be a great diluter, unless you use a lot of fertilizer.

make a small berm around your pond so the top is about 1' above normal ground level. add an over flow pipe in one corner and then put gravel around the berm to gradually slope it to normal level. water wont run in and excess rain water will just flow through the pipe. ill post pics of mine when im done loading some others.

Add a buffer, acid rain is bad. It usually has a pH of 3-5 which is bad, bad, bad.
