I have a 75g going through a cycle right now. It has a 250w heater, a fluval 405 and some lights. At the top of the water there isn't any movement and when i add food it moves around the tank pretty well. Now that brings me to my next question.

What can i do to get the water at the top of the tank moving? I have zero room for a hob so that is out. And no room at the sides of the tank for a filter hanging off the sides. So i heard of a spray bar? Fluval skimmer or something like that, it sucks water down? I need help, i added 2 comets because well I had them, im taking the filter from my convict tank and washing the filter inside my 75g, did it once already and the tank looks 50% clear vs the day before.

Some insight would be great.

Point the output of the canister at the surface, if you can. I don't like the fluval nozzles though, they are hard to aim. A spraybar would probably be a lot easier, I think I am going to buy 2 of those for my 404s.

You could also use a powerhead. There are various brands, aquaclear and hydor koralia are supposed to be good. They attach to the glass on the inside with a suction cup or a magnet.

anyone with pictures on how they are setup?

try a koralia power head...or any powerhead

A spraybar will cause surface agitation, as well as a powerhead.
You could also use one of these on your canister intake

That's just what i need, thanks, and thanks to whoever made the thread :headbang2

Aeration is super important, especially when you are cycling a new tank. I always have something breaking the surface of the water.

More air, more GROWTH!!!

I tried one of the surface skimmers for a fluval 205, and must say that it was a PITA. It's nice when you first calibrate it, but as the water level fluctuates over the course of the week, it starts sucking air and making noise. Also, as you have to remove the original intake that has the plastic ball in it that lets you prime the canister, it is a PITA to prime after you clean the canister.

I suggest a DIY spraybar. All you need is a length of pvc and an endcap for it, a few suction cups and BAM, instant surface agitation.

+1

all you need is an air pump. better gas exchange.
