What to do with 5.5gal

-Single strip light (no idea on wattage)

Crayfish. They come in nice colors and have a lot of personality. If you get dwarf crays you could keep a few shrimp as well in a planted tank.

I say go sump. Defiantly stay away form a reef that small. I have a 7 gallon reef and I hate it. Way to much maintenance and really finicky. If you do go sump it eliminates the planted tank but opens up a lot more possibilities for a reef tank, or more water volume for a cray tank.
