I have a 10 gallon tank I used to keep feeders in. I stopped feeding my fish them now it's an empty (still full of water) tank. I seen people do planted tanks, what would it take to turn it into one? Its the standard 10 g start up set

I did a planted betta tank with my 5 gallon and I love it. You could also make it a hospital tank for any new or sick fish you need to treat just use a sponge filter and a Box filter. You can also use it as a place to quarantine plants for any planted tanks or simply run it with sponges literally inside the tank with a few shrimp or a betta so that you always have seeded sponges when you need them for new tanks or transport etc... I don't know just throwing out ideas. This is my 5 gallon planted betta tank

what kind of lighting would I need? could I use the hood that came with it and just get better bulbs? sand rocks or gravel best for live plants ?

I am new to live plants but here is what I did and here is what is working for me. I went the dirted tank route in order to transfer more nutrients to the plant.I used miracle grow organic as the soil about one inch thick. I topped this with a half an inch of fine gravel and 3/4 inch of coarse gravel. I planted the plants (anaubas I think it's called, java fern which isn't really supposed to be planted, and a grass type of plant) for now I used the LEDs that came with the tank but I am currently looking to get some good LEDs which are a necessity. This has been working for me for about a month. Not saying what I am doing is the best way but I am only a plant beginner and still need to build up the equipment I have for plants. I would say go for it because you won't learn without trial and error and because it's a smaller tank if things go south the tank can always be taken down easily and restarted.
