I was just looking for some suggestions on what to do with my aquariums when I eventually move out into an apartment. I have a feeling that many people out there had fish tanks when you guys were kids, so I would just be interested in hearing what you did with them when moving out into an apartment. I assume that most apartments don't allow large aquariums, so did you guys out there simply leave them at your parents house, or what?

I had a 55 I just kept in a spare room in my old apartment. I eventually sold it because I figured that was better then it getting broken from just sitting empty and unused.
Leaving it at my moms wasn’t an option.

Maybe put it in a storage unit and pay a monthly fee if reasonable.

left my 29 gallon at home with mi madre when i went off to school. it was sparsely stocked when i left and she didnt mind feeding and maintaining it until all of the fish died after a few years.

i tried to maintain a 55 for a couple years in my various college apartments. but my oscars and gt eventually fried themselves by breaking the heater presumably and i shut the whole operation down.

it was definitely a pain moving that thing around and constantly setting it up and breaking it down. and the maintenance was tough as a full time student athlete. perhaps a smaller tank with smaller fish would have been more conducive to my lifestyle.

i havent been able to properly keep fish until just last year when i bought my own home finally.

I just got ground floor apartments and told them it was whatever the max they said I could have. I usually had at least a 125 in all my early years of apartments. I’m assuming you mean moving out of your folks place.

Get renter insurance. It’s super cheap. I know you’ll not want to spend anything extra but it’s like $10 a month. Eat ramen instead of a fast food burger one night and it’s basically paid for haha.

I mabe sure to find a apartment on a slab. Then I moved my 210 gallon tank there only to let her sit empty for 4 years lol. I bought a house last year and it had to have a place for my tank (house is also on a slab). My aquarium has been up and running now for about 8 months or so. I guess the moral of the story is sometimes you have to take a brake from the hobby if your living arrangement doesn’t allow it. Side note I recently got into cherry shrimp and I wish I did years prior. Aquariums don’t need to be monsters to be fun. Good luck.

Hello; When I first went off to college I left my two small tanks at my parents house. That did not last long. I was able to have small tanks from time to time while in school and then when I got a job. I started keeping fish around 1959 and only had a 10 and 20 gallon at my parents house. Also only had small tanks in apartments and such for many years. Was not until the mid 1970's that I had a place where I could have a large tank. I still have the 20 gallon I started with back in the day.
If your parents indulged you with large tank(s) at home then you may have problems in an apartment. Check the rules of the new place to see what they allow.

I would just sell the tanks and get one of whatever size you are allowed. I have found you can usually get one size up and they don't know the difference; if a 55 is allowed, they probably won't give you trouble about a 75. Probably is the key word here.
I'm in the same situation, moving from a house to an apartment in a few months. I just bought an acrylic 55, and am selling most of my fish, then will sell the larger tanks. Sucks, but career/life comes before the hobby to me, so that one day I can afford a nice house with huge tanks.

Perhaps I misspoke; I am not necessarily interested in what to do with the actual fish tanks as much as the fish in the tanks. Right now I am going to community college, but when I do eventually move out in a year or two, I want to know what I should do with my fish. Most of them are fish that aren't in high demand/aren't commonly kept as pets, so I think that they'd be very difficult to give away.
