Right now, I have 4 301 AquaClear Powerheads (118 GPH ea.) running at the top of my 125 for some current (were leftover from the UGF that was in there. I was thinking about putting them lower in the tank to get a little more current towards the bottom, one reason being to push the poo to one corner. Is this a good idea or should I sell them and get one big powerhead, possibly a different brand and type? I'm trying to make the tank look as clean as possible and use the powerheads for aeration, so I'm unsure about having 2 feet of air tubing and all that in the middle/bottom of the tank. I have two biowheel filters. Will that be enough oxygen or do I need the powerheads or some sort of air stone, too. I would rather not have any airstones. If I got rid of one of the HOB's and made a W/D, would that be sufficient?

The more I read this, the more I'm leaning towards one powerhead. Which one would you guys suggest?

Thanks for bearing with me.

Edit: I guess if i made a wet/dry, i could just set up the outlet so it pushed the current the way I wanted it too...duh!

If you need to get rid of a few PH I will take them off your hands.

I'll def get a hold of you if I get rid of them.

Anyone have any ideas?

You dont need any power heads or air stones what so ever...unless you have a massively deep tank and a HOB filter and you need to eliminate dead spots. As long as you tank is not stagnant you will be fine. Just make sure your HOB is causing surface agitation and flow (any flow even very small amounts of flow) which by design it will.

Now depending on what fish you have you might want some powerheads. Some fish prefer current while others prefer calm water. Or if you want your fish in top condition arrange them in a manner that keeps them fighting the current.

But in the end you dont need any powerheads on your tank as long as you have surface agitation your fish will be covered for oxygen (Assuming your water quality is good enough to absorb oxygen and not already saturated)

Yea let me know I dont have any use for them right now but I am thinking about my next tank already!

thanks, fish. the HOB's are working great and do pretty good at surface agitation since they're biowheel filters. I'm used to hauling fish w/ oxygen bottles so I probably think I need more than I actually do, lol. I would like one powerhead for some current, though. Guess I'll just get a bigger one and not worry about plumbing the air tubing unless I can hide it.

I think you should be ok as is. But hey I always over filter because it cant hurt! I just don't over do it. But with the power heads in place and making sure you have no dead spots you should be ok.. ;)
