i had my female motoro with a giant gourami for a few months since i had it. they both were eating great and looked healthy. but then a month or so ago the gg started to get larger and more aggressive. there were noticeable shreds along her fins, but she was still eating and doing fine.
i didn't want to risk it so i separated them and moved her into a larger tank with my less aggressive fish. she was doing ok for a little, but then she stopped eating after a few days. after a week she was constantly lifting her left disc. i panicked as i thought it was early signs of death curl and she was stressed from the tankmates, so i moved her back in with the gourami. that same day she looked alot better, no folding, and coming up to eat floating pellets.
but the gg continued to nip at her fins overnight. after a couple days even though they were healthy i didn't like the nipping, so i moved the gg and kept the motoro by herself. but now she's barely eating or moving, and folding her discs once a while again.
it seems to me that she likes being with the gourami, even though the gourami is nipping her. are rays social in that way? i thought even if fish are social it's usually within their own species.
should i keep her isolated? move her back with the gg and hope the nipping doesn't go too far? maybe get her another ray?
