Hey guys and gals I've been gone for a long time and my tank is showing it, lol. Anyways I have today off of work and decided after some Christmas $$ that I got I should treat my tank to an update...I had it setup quite nicely then we went on vacation and somehow it didn't fare well (I don't know...I think the guy fed them too much) so I sort of let it go to the crapper since then (about 7 months ago).
Then I got a desperate call from a friend saying that his mom had a tank with some goldfish in them that he wondered if I could take off of her hands and I was like sure...no biggie they'll probably die soon enough...they are just goldfish and my current tank is a 30gal tall so there is plenty of room...
Well I was a bit shocked to say the least when I got there because she had about 6 BIG goldfish (5"-6" bodies) in a tank that was probably 3 gallons...
Ok, so I took them anyway because I felt bad for them and I put them in my tank...now I've realized how messy these guys are...I can't keep the water clean, algae is growing like mad (probaly not related) and the tank is a mess...no more live plants because of how messy they are so now I want to get rid of them...the lfs said they would take fish back and pay a little (I'm not worried about the money but I just want them out of here...I'm tired of them and they won't die!)
I had a 10gal tank when I started years ago with a bunch of zebra danios in it and I loved them...they were active and looked great (unlike these fat suckers that sit there) so I was thinking about starting over with some live plants and something small like them.

What do you all think? Is it wrong for me to give these fish back to the pet shop?
I did it to be nice but now I don't even enjoy the tank because of them...

The algae is caused by excess nutrients in the water which is caused by a heavy bioload, so please get rid of the Goldfish.

The 30 would be perfect for 1 African Leaf Fish. They are really cool mini monsters that would be fine in a 30.

Ok, I think I'll pack them up in a bucket and take them over to the pet shop here in a bit...

I want to find some Java Moss and something else for the back of the tank for height...then put some little fish in it...or maybe one big one...

A pair of convicts or firemouths would do well in a 30 gallon and be plenty entertaining.

Convicts, yes

Firemouth's no, they get 6 inches, so you could get 1 but thats it

ok, I think I'll go see what they have...

Can convicts be with some Danio's?

No, I wouldn't put them together, they would get beat up or killed.

Ok, then in that case I think I'll just get some neon tetra's and some zebra danios...maybe 6 of each...

In a 30 gallons, you will want 10-15 of each. Best to keep them in more than just 6.:) As they don't occupy the same level, you should be fine.:)
