I currently have 2 jack dempsey cichlids, one midevil, 2 convicts, one green terror, a pleco, and a baby jaguar cichlid that is super jacked up. I want to give most if not all of the fish to my LFS and get one "wet pet" baby fish and raise it. My tank is 85 gallons (72"x15"x18"). I am tired of convicts and Jack Dempseys (Since I started the hobby I have never not had one of each haha). I have had oscars before but they have always been killed by my other fish. I have thought about keeping the Midevil alone, but I want to keep looking to find the perfect fish. I realize that my 85 gallon will be cramped for some fish eventually but I should be able to keep most cichlids alone for life. I was thinking a single male jag, a full midas or a full devil, oscar (2 of them until they are bigger), maybe a different parachromis? I want something that will be somewhat interactive and enjoyable to watch, and I want something that will grow rather large. I would love to hear some suggestions from people! and the main idea is that i want to start over new.

Width and length of the tank? Male jags can hit 14+ inches given time so a tank less than 6 long is not ideal. I'd get a Midas, midevil, red devil,Oscar, or a Freddy

Honestly I've had all those fish you have just mentioned, I hve never experienced the interactive levels of another fish like an Oscar, they know when you come home, when you wake up, when it's feeding time, they come to greet you at the top of the tank! They grow big and beautiful, although no the best looking or coolest or rarest I think best wet pet hands down!

Oscars are basically water dogs, don't expect the same level of owner interactiveness from parachromis. The closest you'll get to that is a amph like Midas, red devil, etc.could try a vieja like blackbelt or syn

My pure breed male Midas is almost as personable as my Oscar is, but in a different way. Oscars like "Hey buddy, feed me" and the Midas is like "Hey buddy, let me eat your face!" through the glass lol.

Honestly, for me it would be a tough call between the two as far as personality. How ever I do like how much more active my Midas are than my Oscar is. If your wanting personality The Oscar is a hard one to beat.

Just this morning I showed my brother how my Oscar was all chill and as soon as he saw me grab the food container he was just like a dog begging, swimming back and forth, up and down all frantic like where My Midas will see it and he knows what it is but he just calmly watches the surface waiting for the pellets and then violently attacks the pellets as they hit the water lol.

love my midas' so i will say a good quality midas from rapps or similar... polleni are also really cool and very similar to oscar in personality imo. cuban are on my want to own list aswell theres my three!-)
