I just got a tank for free, but I have no idea what to do with it. I'm not even sure if I could keep a "monster" fish in it, considering the width of it. The dimensions are:

48x12x20 (inches, length, width, height). Any suggestions for what I could turn this tank into? Originally, when I saw it, I planned for an Oscar, but then I measured it. So any suggestions on what could be kept, and the actual gallonage if you could. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like a 55-60 gallon. Nice feeder tank or sump for the monster tank.
Maybe some smaller cichlids with monster attitudes.

That's what I was thinking, with the cichlids. I think if I did the math right it's like 57 gallons. It sounds like an odd number, though. I was thinking maybe a nice mbuna setup, since I can easily get alot of free slate rock.

What would you suspect is the largest fish I could put in, in terms of length? 6''?

Depends on the amount of rockwork and decor you put in. Also the flexibility of the fish(eel, poly). Six to eight inches would be the max and still have some room.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was pretty much thinking a bunch of smaller fish. Maybe a group of Pseudotropheus saulosi.

I've heard Convicts breed alot, and I think I'd enjoy that. I've never actually kept Cons, but everyone says they're like rabbits. True?

Cons would do it in a puddle during an earthquake.

True

Ha, I guess it is true, then. The only other thing I've bred was livebearers, so this would be a welcomed change. However, I'm unsure on how Convicts are sexed. Is there any visual differences between male and female, if not how is it done?
