I have been keeping a pair of small mouth buffalo for about a year on a diet of algae wafers. They have been doing well enough on this and the detritus found on the bottom of the tank, but I am concerned about nutrient deficientcies. Does anyone know of any other foods that they might take? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like they are eating what they eat in the wild - nothing wrong with that. Try experimenting and see what they will or won't eat.
Got a pic of them? Love to see one. Im trying to get one but the ones I catch are to big even for my 500.
Actually, buffalo feed primarily on insect larvae and other aquatic inverts like zooplankton in the wild. Algae is very little part of their diet. How big are they? I would suggest feeding some sort of frozen worms depending on size. They will also eat earthworms. You can continue feeding algae wafers, but mix in a higher protein pellet or shrimp pellets. The best way to keep fish healthy is a balanced diet. Start mixing frozen and dried foods to plump them up. Algae won't cut it. I'd love to see a pic as well.
