hello to all,

i have a current tank of 36"x18"x22" and using a Canister Filter of 1200L/H
but still there are a lot of white substance floating around. this might refer to the fine white sand i am using and i want to get rid of the fish droppings at the bottom as the amount get bigger since the fishes grow...

I am thinking about getting either 1 or 2 top filters or a sump cause my tank's stand have a board in the middle for fish food and filter so that will limited the size of the sump.

here's a picture might help explaining what i mean as my english is not very gd.:screwy:

i would suggest using a fine floss in the filter, this will help get all the small particles out of the water. If the sand is really fine, then you may always have this problem everytime the sand gets stirred up.

....and use a siphon hose for the poop on the bottom! :D

but this might slow down the in/out put of the filter itself? i alright have a uv attach at the out put so may be i should get another filter for the job?

 the poop doesn't go until the hose sucks up a lot of sand.

If you want to get another filter you certainly could. I would probably just get a cheaper hang on filter and use that for your mechanical filtration. This should do the job for you. Another option would be to remove the uv and use floss and carbon. This wont restrict the flow to much unless the floss gets very very very dirt and you never change it lol. Good husbandry skills should do the trick.

I avoid using very fine sand for mostly that reason. I have a marine tank, that always has sand particles floating around. Soon i will be removing that sand and getting some larger grade sand. to take its place.

Please inform us on the size of the tank??

In the picture, what kind of fish is the one in the middle, infront of the rock? Thats a nice fish? Where can I get one?(if its the same fish I'm thinking of, of course)

yeah i think that might just point out what i am facing with fine sand. i don't think i am going to get floss and carbon cause it will drop down the PH level for my cichlid. the tank size is 50 UK gallon or 60 US gallon. but should i really take out the UV? although i never come across green water before but i am sure it will kill some germs.

Z, i got that fish in Hong Kong but i am not sure it is a white or black calvus as i got them both at the same time in the same size. and once they get into the tank the black becomes more white because of the sand and the white become more black cause it got scared by its tank mates (a big Altolamprologus compressiceps and one yellow calvus plus a big discus) so i could not really tell.

although some people said if white calvus kept on its own would be purely white but i don't have the space for a spare tank for that. lol

but here is a web should help you find out more http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=12
