hi peeps, i recently juz ordered two 6x2.5x2.5 ft (1000 litres,280 gallons) tank side by side together as im rearing arowanas 1 chili red and 1 sapphire gold, both approximately ard 30cm,i got 2 tanks so each one will be kept in seperately to avoid any fights. Both will have a 4ft by 2ft by 2ft sump overflow filter each. the tank will be finished on the 1st july, due to my house stairwell the tank maker company have to do it on-site as the tanks cannot be carried in. juz wondering whether its best to keep only the arowana in the bare tank or should i add in companions for it? i heard its better to keep lesser fishes so the maintenance will be lesser for a bigger tank,as my arowanas will still continue to grow, they will produce more waste and more nitrate and ammonia will build up,so the maintenance will get higher as it grows.maybe once it starts growing bigger the water change will have to increase from 10% once every 2 week to once a week.if i do get tankmates the water change have to be more frequent.like maybe 10% twice a week.and also the feeding.and im going to be quite busy next year as i start schooling so still considering whether i should intro tankmates or just let them stay alone in the tank. any advice anyone? (pics will be provided soon)

Sounds like an awesome setup for some awesome fish!!

It all depends on what you want. The arowana wont care but if you would like something else in their with them you have many options. Most medium agro fish that are not small enough to eat or big enough to mess with the arow should work

In a properly filtered and cycled tank ammonia should not build up. Also water change size and intervals depend on the size of your arows and tank mates. The only way to really know it try a system and then check your levels. Then adjust to more or less depending on what you get for readings.

If your not going to be around then I HIGHLY suggest you find someone you trust to take care of your fish daily. This is a large investment and it would be a shame to waste it due to lack of attention and maintenance. Tanksmates will make if a bit harder to maintain but regardless it will need daily attention.

1. Learn the nitrate cycle inside and out so that your an expert on it.

2. Ensure someone will be around to take daily care of your precious fish and is able to perform the maintenance required.

3. Have a backup plan for every emergency. I just had a tank drain on me but because I was ready for such an event no fish were lost and the problem was contained.

4. Make sure your ready for this adventure as it is not as easy and one would think.

5. Post pics so that you get more responses :D

its really up to you.
do you like any other species?
of course more fish means more work.
but its always worth while. ;)

Your right about the tank mates thing more tank mates will mean more work keeping the tank clean but aros do jsut fine with tank mates i would add some datnoids or mabye some less aggressive cichlids

the thing is my aros are weird they dun bother eating their food unless they have competition like other fish to compete with them for the food,if i put 1 aro in the tank by itself it will eat lesser and wont grow much.i think catfish and dats are good tankmates but i dun think they are competitive for food,as u see my aros are rather small due to the fact they dun eat much.anyone can give suggestions on how to increase their appetite without introing tankmates?
