Hi, I was wondering what I should be looking for when buying a used filter. I have found 2 potential filters on craigslist a Eheim 2028 for $100 and a Eheim 2217 for $120. I would like to know what sort of questions I should be asking to make sure I don't get a broken or about to break filter.

Test them if you can even in a sink and look for leaks, check all fittings gaskets and look for cracks and signs of damage. unless its a really good deal id go with new. New eheim 2217 with media and disconnects on eBay is 140 and free ship

Wouldnt buy unless you can see them running. With the 2028 you'll need to also see it with power off as they will leak from the ma in gasket. This sometimes doesnt happen while running, but will leak all over the place if power goes out

Check impeller and motor housing for any damage. If there still running on his tank ask for a pic of them working.

Good advice above ^^

Listen to them run water. Rattling or vibrations are bad signs

And after all the above and you still buy used, then make sure you adequately clean it destroying any possible cross contamination. Last thing you want to do is infect your stock with a potential pathogen or some other goodie along for the ride.

Well I don't usually buy used. But this old rich lady took 2 fluval 405s back to the lfs and bought a sump system. Told the owner to just unload them and give her store credit for the cost. I bought them for 50 bucks each and the one still had the media in the plastic bags. But yeah when and if I buy used I inspect them and want to hear them run. Happy hunting.

DONT THINK I would even buy USED CAN UNLESS I saw it running... I even worry about hobs... the only type of filter I wouild buy used and not see it running is the sponge filter...also if they want even half of retail I WOULD want all the media there, too:popcorn:

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I should rethink the buying used thing. I know that they both come with media, but none of the hoses needed to connect it up. I would like to get another Eheim as the one I have now has been really reliable, but that might be out of my budget.

Has anyone had any experience with aqua nova filters ? They are on sale at the fish store by my house for a decent price, but all the reviews I have found online have been pretty mixed.

Yeah if the filter isn't complete and running I wouldn't even consider buying it unless it was just for parts.
