Hey guys, I've done some searching but wanted to get a good opinion from the experts. I'm currently in the market for a young flowerhorn. When buying from young, what do you look for? This is of course is directed to the person who wants to buy one from a lfs.

How big is the young fish though? I need to know that first in order to take any step further on deciding which 1 is good or not.

im not looking at one in particular. i guess the most common i have seen around my area have been up to about 3". what traits? color? anything special?

Ive been in your situation. My LFS has a tank full of FH fry up to 1.5" I sat and watched the tank for a half hour one day and just could not tell which is male, female, big, healthy, etc. I have heard the biggest and the most colorful or the most dominant is the choice. I said forget it and purchased a 5" from a FH dealer.

that may be what i end up doing. the one lfs around me has some decent fish of all species. i guess im hoping to go find a $10 fh that ends up being show quality. or is this not reality? i asked about some in the past, but they said they were just from a wholesaler and didnt know any history of their parents. am i dumb to think that you can find some quality fh?

I wouldnt say dumb..in fact not at all !!! Show quality FH definitely not from a wholesaler. Check this guy out...he's got FH from 500. to 50. give him a shot. On MFK his name is gotkok , here is his website. www.flowerhorn4jersey.com his name is Tuan. Check him out and get in touch with him he ships and has many more than what is on his website. He's awesome to work with.

If you are looking for a nice fish, and you don't want to go through the hassle of buying juvis, growing them out then crossing your fingers for a good one, check out aquabid. You can get a 3" fish for $50. That is big enough to tell if it is male or female,it should have some signs of a KOK,and you should be able to get a good idea of how it will turn out. Look for sellers from Thailand. They have awesome FH at good prices. They will also come down on the price,so don't pay what they have it listed for.

Flowerhorns From Beyond also has some nice fish. Definetely worth checking out.

You usually won't find good flowerhorns at the LFS or from any of their suppliers but it depends on where you live. I like to buy fry from reputable Thai sellers. I always ask to see pictures of the parents so I know what to expect in the fry. You can usually get anywhere from 5-15 fry shipped to the states for $100 then you pay about another $60-70 to have them trans-shipped to your door. If you let me know what state/city you're in I may be able to find some members local to you who keep/breed/sell nice flowerhorns. Check out flowerhorncraze.com for fish too. My only suggestion to you is not to come home with a flowerhorn from the LFS. Chances are it will be a low grade zz red dragon with a stupid name and it will get just as big, eat just as much food, and take up just as much space as a nice flowerhorn would.
