Hey guys im new here and just got my new tank. Im relatively new to the hobby ive kept a few fish before this but im still learning alot! Im in no rush im still in the process of setting up my tank. But I was hoping some of you guys could give me some ideas on what to put in it! I like the look of cichlids but thiers just so many! would i be able to keep a few small assorted ones in my tank for life? If not any other active fish to recommend? I know these questions are asked all the time I did my best to search before asking.

A couple trios of dwarf cichlids along with all sorts of other possibilities in a planted tank. Some examples: Bolivian rams, German blue rams and variants, rainbow cichlids, micro rainbow fish, Burmese algae eater, reticulated loach, flying fox, various gourami, Cory cats, paradise fish, many tetra, danios. All these are pretty much compatible, a few of each would get you an awesome tank.

40 breeders are really nice with there 18" width. Lots of options. I like what was posted above me.

thanks you guys. Appreciate the input. slowly making my way threw the cichlids stickies on here.

You could keep a few small assorted cichlids for life. But they will be small and not as fun. You could get one bigger cichlid instead of a few small ones.

Most bigger cichlids when kept by them selves will sit in one corner most of the time---boring. I would do a species tank say a large school of odessa barbs 6-8. Cool colors on them then throw in 3-4 giant danios for the blue color. 3 cory cats and your good to go. This tank will have a lot of "action".

you could try a group of Tropheus duboisior Tropheus moorii they are really neat stay small very active. Really need a species tank and the larger the group the better. There also readily available at most LFS and even petsmart and petco have them occasionally. I believe the moorii also come in, a few different colors in stripes yellow and red maybe but Im not positive on that.

Thanks guys I will check out all your suggestions! Yea I definitely dont want one big fish for life ive done it before and all tho I enjoyed it this tank is going in the living room so I have to think of my mom and grandma who want to see them interacting with each other.

If u wanna see a pair of bigger fish interacting with eachother, go with a pair of sajicas or convicts
