Hey Everybody,

Well long story short, my aunt stopped running her marine set up...and thru my convincing she decided to go with fresh instead of quiting the hobby. Where trying to figure out how after taking out all the saltwater eqipment out of the sump it will just be an empty 3 chamber sump with a filter sock and an external pump. Thru reading the sticky on filter media should I just pack as much pot scrubbies into the middle chamber as wel as where the external pump is and around the filter sock?

Thanks A Million heres a pic of the sump but it still has some saltwater equipment in it.

The filter sock is not in the picture, but it would be on the right side

if youre doing it as a wet/dry scrubbies will work. If you want to use something like pond matrix you can just drop a bag of it in the sump.

Do you know which system works better? Now that I think about it, I don't think it could work as a wet/dry...is it possible based on that layout?

With those compartment sizes it may not have a lot of room for wet/dry media. I've used bio balls and pond matrix and prefer matrix since it can stay submerged. Less noise and less room that way. They with habeas their advantages but ive never done a side by side comparison to say if one is more efficient than the other

Ok thanks for the tips, so dtarting from right to left...

Filter sock(conpartment 1), pond matrix (conpartment 2) and in conpartment 3?

Thier is an external pump in compartment 3 i couldput egg crates on top of pump for her to add more media, anything in particular or just more pond matrix?

Also is thier a certain brand of pond matrix that works best or its a brand by itself? Thanks

I suggest the pond matrix/ceramic media option as well. No specific brand, just find it cheap.

Charlie and the fish tank factory used to be the best source for ceramic rings.

What media is "best" is highly debatable. Since everyone seems to agree to disagree about it I found it easiest to just incorporate several means of bio.

I'd use ceramic rings in the 1st and last chamber and pot scrubbies in the center in a wert/dry configuration fed off a "T" in the return line so some of the water that would be returned to the tank flows through the wet/dry.

Best of both worlds. This is exactly how I set up my last sump and I'm pretty happy with it, except I just built the wet/dry part out of a 20 gallon tank and set it on top of the sump.
