Currently, I am in the process of getting rid of my Mpimbwe Frontosas (5 of them), a Malawi Eye Biter, and a syn cat. They are just getting too big for my 55 and have to go. However unfortunate this may be, I do not have the ability to get a bigger tank for my apartment and I would rather give the frontosas up to a bigger home. Right now I am contemplating what fish I could replace them with in the 55. I want to avoid any possible future tank upgrades for the fish I would be putting in it, so I'm looking for some fish that can stay in there for life. Right now I am leaning towards a Male Green Terror, convicts, silver dollars, firemouths, and a senegal bichir (or maybe go the dwarf pike route?). What do you think I should put in there out of those fish? I would really like to have a great looking male GT so which of those other fish, and how many, should I put with the GT? Like always, I would like to avoid substantial aggression conflicts between the fish. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

personally i love jack dempseys and firemouths, convicts are ok, but firemouths will give you blue and red colors if you are picky about choosing your fish at the petstore like i am, the current firemouth i have shares a 55 aquarium with a black convict and 2 electric blue jack dempseys, alot really depends on your personal taste and what you believe will match, green terrors are mean sometimes but each fish has its own temperment, i had a 4 inch green terror living with a couple of full grown jack dempseys and they were perfectly fine but ive heard stories of epic battles between the 2, trial and error right?

but that is something about cichlids, your always going to have some agression with them, you cant get around that, but just think of it this way, when you add a new fish, think of it as the pecking order, they are choosing who the dominant fish in that tank will be, its similar to how some mammals choose a new leader, the most colorful fish with the best design and usually the biggest comes out on top

If you wont be able to upgrade a Green terror is not an option. If you want to go CA cichlids your options are firemouth, convict, HRP, Sajica, etc. Basically anything that doesn't get over 6 inches.

I agree with previous post ... I don't think a GT is a good choice for your 55 gallon tank ...

you could go with a Blue Acara (similar fish, but smaller) or a variety of combinatons of Firemouth, Convict, Rainbow or other small- to medium-sized cichlids

I don't know if you can keep a GT in a 55 but plenty of people seem to think an Oscar is ok in a 55 and I haven't seen many full grown GTs that are bigger than fully grown Oscars. If you do go ahead I would avoid other Cichlids as you will end up with a lot of aggression in that space unless you are really lucky. Silver Dollars like to be kept in shoals so it would be a bit tight with a decent sized shoal. If it were me I would go with a bottom dweller like one of the smaller fancy plecs or catfish, something that isn't likely to bother the GT and the GT will ignore.

a pair of firemouths, some SD, a fancy pleco and mayb a pictus
