Looking to get a 125, and I've been thinking about a setup. I'm looking into central/south american cichlids with a Red tiger motaguense pair, or singular as the main piece. What other fish would be good options to fill up the tank in a single and paired RTM tank? I'm thinking of a natural highly decorated tank with a slight flow and lots of wood and some plants (if possible). Lets hear some ideas!

I am planning similar with a 180 and a single RTM, hopefully I can weed out a female. I have never kept em before so my list may not work...
Hoping to add with it:
Female festae
Cuban
Polleni
group of FM's

All will be juvies and added together, likely be 2-3 of the RTM and Festae added until I can determine sex and pick out a good one.

I have a pair of Mota (male 9,5 inches, female 7 inches) in a 240 g and i can't keep nothing with Them, they have killed everything i have tried, Big pair of jaguars (male 15 inches, female 11 inches) pair of vieja argentea (male 13 inches, female 9 inches) a male red terror (16 inches) and some others, killed Them all over Night so i didn't have a chance to separate them....
really sad to have lost all them fine fish but the motas are still my favorites....

I kind of figured nothing would live with a pair other than possibly some dithers. So I guess what would be good stocking choices for a single RTM

If its a female,Dempsey, vieja, convicts, firemouth, anything durable really. Male is taking a risk with tank mates. I've seen males clear out 125 once they get big. I personally would leave a male by itself or with a female.

love to do a pair of RTM or Festae, but I can't justify the real estate they need for just 2 fish. (my first big tank) Now if I had 2-3 6 ft tanks to spare.. Once I have some of these perhaps my thought will change and I will want to go species but for now I want to get experience with a few different fish.

You can try what ever fish you want when they are small. The aggression hits peak when they breed. I agree that a pair would be pushing it in the 125 long term 5+ years. Males top 13" females over 10".

And they are rough on each other. I personally think they are more aggressive than Dovii towards tankmates while small. But that has just been my experience.

I agree with most everyone else... they can be pretty mean. You can always try different Amphs with an RTM, but really to say one type will work is a crap shoot. The male in my avatar got pretty nasty and he was kept with a bunch of different tank mates. Good luck to you!!!

Only had male rtms ,no females yet .There different from other cichls .Meaning they grow slower than average ,especially in community of others, they are dominant but when others outgrow them ,they get funny hide all time , dont come out to eat become territorial. They have to be the dominant fish,i have a 225 and a 75 gal.I now only have one left in 75 with a red terror because they have same growth rate ,hes very healthy but hes the boss ,they love bichirs and eels too usually side by side all day but ya your stocking ,,,rtm, red terror ,grammode, istlantum, green texas and a pleco up to 14 inch. Thats colorful and personalities the same , loiselli too ,but goodluck
