I am setting up a 150g freshwater tank with a 30g refugium in a classroom and need some advide on what to stock. I am going to keep guppies and ghost shrimp in the refugium to have a constant supply of live food for the main tank, but cannot decide exactly what to do with the main tank. I would like to do some cichlids that are hearty and would do well at close to neutral pH. Those are my only real restrictions. Any ideas?

How big do you want the cichlids to be? Aggression levels? Since it's in a classroom I think bigger fish with big personality would be the best. With your ph you could probably go any way you want... African, CA, SA...

I would like to possibly do 10 fish in there and the more active the better. I think the activity level will get the kids really interested. I have a 30 gallon planted tank in there right now and they love it, but have a grant opportunity to do something much bigger. I really don't have an issue with aggressive fish as it would foster an interesting discussion in the class.

Seeing how this will be a classroom how old will the children be?

No pacu please do not get a pacu they get way to big for a 150.

I agree no Pacu.

I think growing out a couple of Oscars, a GT and a Dempsey would be nice. Add some Fancy Plecos right from the start, Maybe a handful of Clown Loaches.

As for the Fuge, I'd go with the Convicts or Paradise Fish and Ghost Shrimp. I'm not a fan of Guppies myself.

Ok... Question two: do you want to breed them? Might be really cool for the kids to see. Cichlid parental behavior with their offspring is always really interesting. Since you have the refugium below the tank you can grow fry out there too.

I would recommend against raising guppies for food in the refugium. One, pellets are just a better source of nutrition. Two, if you are adding new feeders to the fuge, you are potentially introducing disease into your main tank.

As far as active fish some African cichlids would be nice bright colors and very active however you would want a lot more then 10 though to help spread out the aggression. Another idea would be some peacocks or haps not sure how active they are but there bigger and good colors.

When I said peacocks I was talking about cichlids not bass!
