im looking to stock my new tank and would really like to keep 2 oscars and at least 2 electric bllue jack dempseys. other fish of interest to me are choclates ,convicts and severuems. how many fish of this size would be good to keep with out over stocking my new tank. i have kept these fish in the past but only in species tanks in very small numbers. this is my first tank over 55 gallons:headbang2

i wouldn't keep EBJDs in with oscars. oscars grow fast, ebjds grow extremely slow. other than that... as long as the filtration is good, you can keep a lot of fish in there. several mated pairs of anything would be awesome and thats a big enough tank to pull it off.

Agreed on the EBJD's, unless you can find some that are already 4-5 inches. I like your ideas. My 210 has a mix of aggressive and semi aggressive with JD, GT, Oscar, Chocolate, Jag, Freddy, Midas, Pike, Mota, etc... I have done a lot of shuffling to find fish with the right personalities to make it work. I think the safe route would be to stick with the ideas you listed. As far as numbers, if you maintain weekly, have lots of good filtration, and limit your number of Oscars, you could do at least 15-20 cichlids like the ones you mentioned. If you want less maintenance I would go 10-12. In my 210 I have 12 fairly large cichlids, but I do alot of work on the tank.

My tank is similiar, with two midas, pair of pikes, umbee, synspilium, arowana and some dollars. A pair of jags as well.
Never any scrapping.

i would do a argentea, a few pikes, RTM, freddy, oscar, cubans, true parrot cichlids, GTs, midas, and maybe a few other

^^ disagree with the midas and Argentea. They would still be too aggro for a proper balanced tank. I am sure he is going for a semi aggressive tank not for fights. Get some True Parrots or even Vieja Melanrus. Go for 4 or 5 Large cichlids over 12" and fill the rest of the space with smaller fish like Salvini, FM, Robertsoni, Sieboldi, cutteri things of that nature.

Wish you were closer. I have two huge Oscars, albino and tiger, that need a home like that.

Definitely agree that the Oscars and EBJD's are not a good match.

you guys have great ideals. i really apreciate everyones input about this. it has been a dream to own a tank big enough to house my favorite fish for about 20 years now.
