I have a 150 gal tank 5x2x2 running a tetra tec ex 1200 and a fluval 405 my stock is a 18 inch silver and 14 inch tsn. Do I need more filtration. Do weekly water changes at 45 to 50%

Depends on stocking of tank.
if your tank is heavily stocked, the more turn over the better.

but it also depends on your bio media capacity. not just mechanical.

general rule is 5 to 6 times per hour of tank volume.
this can be offset by more bio media or reversed, more turn over for less bio media.

key is this.
make sure you make room for AMONIA surges.
spikes will be hardful for the fish long term. stunt the aro and reduce its lifespan.

I was thinking.... Maybe this is dumb... But if your tank is turning over so much it really doesn't even go through the media... Basically common sense? The slower it goes over the more stuff it catches right? Someone tell me different?

I think its good but only if you have multiple filter mine turns about 8 times by 5 filter and 1 sump on 3 link tanks (180, 100, 75) =355gal.

Depends on how easy you want your life to be, for 180 gals you have pretty weak mechanical filtration, but you should have enough turnover for bio. If you don't like vacing and cleaning your substrate add another filter for better mechanical filtration, id run all your bio in your hob, and stack that fluval with a lot of filter padding so its good for mechanical.

Id say a good sump + that canister is ideal. Or just add an fx5 cuz those fish get big...

You have apprx 600gph which is just about 3-4x turnover, if you read zero n03/n04 (ammonia) then your ok atm but remember as your fish grow so does your bio load! Shoot for 6-10x turnover as stated above ^^

Your filters will do 0 for reducing n03, only wc or PLANTS can do that.

I was thinking I might need more both the 405 n the ex1200 are both full of bio ceramic rings n eheim bio. I do change watee weekly. I have two 205 s I could whack on it but I find im edging towards the fx5.
