WHAT TYPE OF DITHERS WOULD YOU USE IN A CA CICHLID TANK

depending on the species you need targets for and the tank size there could be all kinds of choices for you.

I had a pair of festae in a 125 a while back and as target fish I put in about 6 convicts. the 2 male convicts wound up getting killed but the females did fine. They were smaller, quicker and could hide in areas the much larger festae couldn't get to them.

Many would argue that this isn't the best type of environment to keep convicts in...but without having target fish it's highly possible the festae pair might have killed each other.

:)

Silver Dollars are a good Dither .
They are a SA' fish but do grow to a decent size for most SA/ CA' Cichlids to not get eaten or bullied .

Gaint Danios are a nice medium sized fast Dither for most fish .

Congo tetras are very fast and stay moving contantly chaseing each other. They are pricey and you need at least six they work great for me

None. Dithers are to draw out shy cichlids. You are looking for a target fish, and the best thing to use is another cichlid equal in size to handle the male in a standoff.

I disagree. Dithers are used for calming effects.

exactly..they calm the fish that are scared so they're constantly hiding in case a large predator might be around. the school of dithers lets them know that there is nothing to fear. if there were something to fear, the school of dithers would be hiding as well...hence you proved Darth pike's point.

target fish are put in a tank to spread out the aggression between fish that are already in the tank. schooling fish don't usually work very well, imo, as target fish because schooling fish are going to be non-cichlids <unless you use a Cyprichromis species...one of the few schooling cichlids> and ime, most large cichlids tend to ignore non-cichlid fish..not always but in most cases in my experience.

Tiger Barbs can be nippy if not kept in groups of 6 or more. More often than not they get themselves killed. Giant Danios are a good option, but are very skilled escape artists so keep the tank well covered. Tinfoil Barbs get quite large and do best in groups of at least four. So unless you have a very large tank I'd skip this one. Silver Dollars are another option just a little slow moving. So often times will show alot of abuse(nipped fins). Finally my favorite dither is the Beunos Aires Tetra. While they can be a bit nippy they aren't as bad as Tiger Barbs plus they are a quick fish.

silver dollars would probably be the most ballin' of all ballin' dithers to use just cause i think they're ballin'!

female convicts....I will be adding 6 with my male GT
