What type of filtration would be best for a 56g reef tank. I know you guys have said in a previous post that you should only use protein skimmers, but i was thinking maybe dropping a marineland bio-wheel 50 or aqua clear on there too? Let me know if that is a good idea and also what are some choices for protein skimmers for that size tank?

skimmers should not be a sole filtration... it's mainly there to get the crap outta the tank from the rock and corals etc..

just throw a canister on there. she'll be apples.

not a huge fan of canisters, was thinking more along the lines of a HOB.

w/d woudl be the best. and canisters would work well too. hob kinda make the water splash and then u got dried salt all over but they still work good. but if u are goin to get a HOB get a aquaclear they are byfar the best HOB filters

Emp400, AC110, or AC110 ChilleRelleno mod

All run without media, or you could just use some powerheads.

A sump would be the best route though.

most of my friends that run salt tanks, use a skimmer combined with either a canister or hob filter...

Well, if you really want a reef just use from 1 to 1.5 lbs of live rock per gallon of water . That will be all of the filtration that you should need.
