Sold as Texas Cichlid at LFS but then noticed it looks more like carpintis which I believe are different?
Also wondering of Gender?

Yes probably H carpintus.
Looks like a young male to me, by the profile that is starting to slope, the fin trailers starting to come to points, and the lack of dark spot in the dorsal, of course it may also have some maturing to do, so be a bit you'd to know for sure.
