i recently got a new tank that is 90 gallons and currently it is going through its start up cycle. and i was wondering what fish would be good to put in this tank. i want to have alot of color and personality in the tank and i would like to have one carnivorouse fish that wont kill off all the other fish. i would also like to have a small puffer fish of some kind but im not sure which one yet. i was thinking about sticking with mostly south african style fish but im not set on that. so if anyone has any advice on what fish would go well would be very helpful. thanks

With a 90 G tank you have a lot of options. First thing tho do you mean South AMERICAN or was there something special about south African fish? Your best bet would be to just look through the forums at the different fish profiles and see what other people have in their set ups that you like then ask about compatibility. A good place to start looking in here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16
One problem you might have I see with the first fish you said you wanted specifically are the puffers which can be a bit tricky. Main reason being that most are Brackish water fish, they will do fine when small but as they get older the need for brackish water will become more of a requirement for a really healthy fish. Another problem is that some are REAL nasty because they are extremely territorial. Remember they have beaks that crush snails, crabs and other shelled inverts which is also another requirement or else their beaks will not wear down correctly and you'll end up with a fish that can no longer eat. So that being said biting into soft fish tissue will literally be like a hot knife through butter. Another issue is that they are poisonous, so even the small puffers that live throughout their lives in freshwater if eaten will more than likely kill what ever fish eats them. You'll find that most puffer keepers keep only the one puffer in the tank. None of this means tho that there isn't a puffer out there that can live in a community tank but there aren't many that can and finding one might be harder than you think.

no gator, there a many more pure freshwater puffers than their are brackish puffers. http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/ but for the most part the rest of gators info is pretty accurate.:)

Puffers of any type are not generally compatible in a community tank.
I don't know where to get them but if you are going with fish from southern Africa try to find coppernosed barbs or other Raiamas species. One of the smaller Bathybates cichlids would also work, or possibly one of the many African robber cyprinids.

My suggestion would be some African cichlids. Red Zebra, Yellow Tail Acei, Yellow labs. That would give you some nice color.

Id go planted and grab a school of cardinal tetras, a school of black neon tetras, a school of harlequin rasboras, assorted male guppies, a few male swordtails, a school of rummynose tetras, an assortment of smaller barbs, a few small gourami, and then if you can find it something really neat your lfs has that you dont think you'll see elsewhere and that will mesh with those other species. Guarantee that sort of setup will give you something enjoyable to watch for many many hours. I'd give up on the idea of a carnivore because most of the true carnivores are quite large and need to be kept with fish they can't beat up.
