this is one department I have no knowledge in at all when it come to aquariums. I am going to have natural color gravel and a black back ground. What type of light should I get? What color looks the best (I am color blinde so I cannot even form my own opinion). This will not have live plants in it.

Hagen Life-Glo II is a great bulb for natural gravel and black background, gives off a nice white natural light. If you're looking for more of a blue effect, try their Power-Glo bulb. It's comes down to personal preference in my opinion.

Why not go pick up 2 or 3 different bulbs, try them out, and then keep only the 1 you like best?

You neglected to tell us the size tank and its inhabitance...

If it's a 55g or larger (48") and with your color blindness how about a $8 shop light and 2 $2 shop white bulbs to start with. the see if you want to go brighter of softer and change the bulbs accordingly (two different bulbs are ok too).

it will be a 150Gallon, and in it will be a few datnoids, bichir, some synos. Mostly fish that like low light.

As far as the blue, Since i am color blinde i dont see the same thing as everyone else, so i dont understand why ppl perfer the blue light? doesn't it give the tank and artificial look?

hold up hear im color blind but it doesnt mean you see in black and white

all it means is you get mixed up with colors

you may not be able to tell the diffrence between blue and purple
you may not be able to tell the diffrence between green, brown and red
you may not be able to tell the diffrence between yellow and orange

it should have no impact on what lights you buy :grinno:

I never said I saw in black and white, not sure where you got that from???

i want to make sure I dont buy a light that looks ok to me, but is just horrible in reality.

and yes I mix up blue, purple, pinks
green, brown, reds
yellow, light greens
and all types of tans or peach colors

Here's another vote for the Hagen Life-Glo II. I have one on my small office tank and I love how clear the tank looks with this bulb! You may be able to find a 6700K bulb (like the Hagen Life-Glo II) that fits your hood at a local hardware store as well.

I've always been a fan of low lighting tanks. I think it looks more natural. I just switched my 48" light for a 36" and it makes my tank look nice.

it will look the same to you as anyone else you just have problems with IDing colors

i have had the problem for years if not when i was born you see the same as everyone else you just cant make up your mind what color is what

Corallife 50/50's. You get 50% of 6K daylight and the other 50% Actinic blue.
