What type of siamese algae eater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hard to tell by the pic. All should have barbels but the siamensis has 1 pair unlike the false or flying fox with 2. Their are other differences but it's not a good way to figure it out. The 2 "fake ones" have a distinct gold line above the black and the overall body tends to be more "colorful". True siamensis are a drab silver goldish color.

Ok... ya thos guy looks pure silver with just the black line.. maybe his barbells were nipped off from prev owners... got him in quarantine as the water in buddies tank stank something awful

Will be sold as Siamese algae eaters, crossocheilus siamensis but yours looks more like crossocheilus atrilimes. All sold under the same name.
Whilst they do have very short barbles I find the older fish tend to keep them tucked in/folder down 90% of the time.
Thanks for the response.. and sorry about the terrible pics ? the guy never stops moving...

I thought I had the true siamese algae eater, crossocheilus siamensis, but after a bit of digging I may be wrong. Mine have the two barbels but on one care sheet i've come across it says true crossocheilus siamensis DO NOT have maxillary barbels and they are quite rare in the hobby! I'm a bit stumped now. Below is a pic of one of mine.

As far as I know atrilimes only get max 4 inches? Could be wrong but this guy is close to 6

As you say, if it’s almost 6” then it’s not Atrilimes but probably c.sp. ‘Citripinnis’ or c. Obscurus both of which get traded as Siamese algae eaters too. And since
esoxlucius , yours looks to be c.sp.’citripinnis’ , which in turn nilsafeller Obscurus, but there are still that many Undescribed and being described variants
