A regular bluegill

Lepomis Macrochirus- regular ole bluegill. He looks like he might be a regional variant or have a little longear in him though, as his operculum flap is a little long for a straight 'gill. The orange is fairlynormal, my bluegill display's an orange coloration when he's not in the spawning mood.

Interesting that you mentioned the operculum being too long; bluegill in my area often have flaps even longer than that.

yes my area also ......but they will be in the same area as
central Longear so I believe its from hybridization here in the Ozarks.

Hybrids happen, but they're not so common as all that. I think it's just regional variation within L. macrochirus.
