bothell, wa
so my bass came down with there typical ich. so i did what everyone i talked to suggested and upped the temp to 84 and added salt to the tank. woke up this morning and both were dead. but the jag and oscar were fine and still are? are the pb sensitive to too much salt or what.

It could have een a number of things. How big were they? Had they been eating? Did you check the water params? I normally keep my tanks, especially my pbass tanks up close to 90*. I normally just add a little bit of salt.. not a whole dose as it reads on the boxes.

baby pbass are suprisingly fragile. How big was it?

I just went thur the ick thing with my pbass. I did not use salt. I up my temp to 87 and used Ick attack. It took about 4 days to clear up and I did the treatment for 10 days. I left my temp at 87 and they are doing great now.

how big is your cichla? like danh said what are your water parameters? your cichla tank should be at least 87 degrees all the time. if you keep the temp high ich will never show up in your tank. people on this forum use salt to cure some illnesses ... but those on here that know me.. i cant stress it enough ...SALT is BAD for CICHLA. these fish come from a high temp SALT FREE SOFT water enviornments... not the slightest trace of salt is found in the waters they are from...salt may cause even more stress on cichla that are already stressed. some use salt and are ok but in my personal opinion no salt for cichla.. next time if you have ich problems keep the temp high from the start and you will never see any in your tank and if you do.. raise the temp a few more degrees

I agree with your statement of what salt does.. but not that you shouldn't use it. A lot of the fish we keep are like that... we use salt to stress them a little so they produce more slime. That's what it's for. You may not agree that it's helpful, but that is what it's supposed to do.

danh im going to say by all means you are 100% right. i will back you up on almost anything and everything you say because from what i have read and seen and from what we have talked about i consider you an EXPERT fish keep. you are prob one of the most knowledgable people around and you would be the first i would ever go to if ever i ever had any problem with freshwater fish. i trust you and your judgment and you know fact!

thats why i said above that it is my personal opinion not to use salt...

If you add salt and increase the temp you should also add aeration as dissolved O2 lowers with higher temps and higher densities. The other fish could have probably been stressed by the lower O2 levels but not to the point of keeling over.

You should have QT'd the new additions and also QT your feeders. I treat my feeders with aquari-sol at 85 degrees for 4-7 days. Common LFS feeders are packed into tiny overstocked aquariums so parasites in a single fish can infect all of the feeders quickly. Also, most feeders are kept at lower temps so it takes longer for ich to show on them.

thanks guys now next time i wont screw up. i didnt know that they could live in temps up to 87. the salt part does make sense. the water in the tank was perfect and the fish were about 8in. it must have been the salt cause it was pretty quick after that they were dead. well I guess I'll just start at square one again. thanks again for the info

I'm no expert. I can definitely see why you wouldn't like to use salt. I don't use much at all when I do use it.. I'm just saying that the reason why you don't want to use it is the reason that other people do use it. If it does what it's supposed to do, then I think it's a good thing. I haven't studied it's effects enough myself to tell you if it does any good or not.

Since I have used it often though, I doub that some salt killed these fish.

8" though? that sucks.
