hey guys, just by chance last week i found a fumanchu lionfish at the lfs. this is the fish that made me set up a saltwater tank in the first place so after seeing him eat some ghost shrimp i took him home. he eats ghost shrimp no problem, ive even seen him picking at dead ones but he still refuses to take any frozen food so ill probably have to train him with krill and such. he is in a 47gallon tank with about 55lbs of live rock. he is about three inches from nose to tail and he lives with a coral beauty of about the same size and two cinnamon clownfish that are maybe an inch larger. everyone gets along great and theres no aggresion thus far.

when i went to the lfs store in the first place i was going to buy a small goby or blenny to help sift through my substrate or maybe a few hermit crabs. but now that i have the lionfish, i dont want the cleaning crew getting slurped up...

so what can i put in there to move around the sand/crushed coral that wont be dinner for my lionfish? any medium sized gobies or blennys that would work well? thanks in advance.

How about a jawfish? How big deep is the sand bed?

try snails. IME they don't like snails.

Either snails or a tiger tail cucumber," yes they get really big but, they don't produce much bio load", They are also IMO the best sand bed cleaner/turner that you can find.

Since its a fu manchu and they dont really eat fish you can have just about any type of fish, except for maybe the really small coral gobies but i reckon you would be ok with anything bi colour blenny size and bigger. I also wouldnt try a cleaner shrimp or any other type of shrimps or crabs since they will probably be eaten eventually. Although i have seen cleaner shrimps living with some pretty surprising tankmates who are more then happy not to eat them for the free cleaning they get in return.

I have two 14 inche engineer gobies in my 55 gallon and they create mountains of gravel every day and I garentee you that no fumanchu lionfish would eat those. Good luck finding them though, large engineer gobies are almost impossible to find. Even if you do manage to get a pair it takes them about a month to take food on a consistent bases. How big is your tank?

jawfish are cool, i read something about them a while back but id need a refresher. do they get very large? sea cucumber and snails are kind of out of the question, one get too big, the others i really just dont want in the tank. and doesnt the dragon goby change pattern and color as it gets oldeR? thanks for the suggestions guys, any more info on those couple fish would be great. tank is 47gallons and the sand bed is three inches deep or so. maybe even four. its a mix of 2/3 aragonite and 1/3 crushed coral. there is also a pair of cinnamon clowns and a coral beauty. thanks.
