what would be better in a AC tank, a pleco, or a big Chinese alge eater??

Pleco, because it has armor for protection. CAE will get picked on.

ya i saw a big one in a discus/stingray tank at the lfs, and it seemed to be doing very well

The fish is a Xystichromis kyoga flameback. A very rare species of Lake Victoria. I'm getting a colony shipped to me by tomorrow or Friday.

pleco. in my experience, chinese algae eaters are less effective when they get larger, and prefer the slime coating of your fish! [this happened with both mine and my boyfriend's tanks]
