Tomorrow I'm going to purchase either 5 dime sized RBP's or 1 2"inch black piranha. I have a 55 gallon tank that is 100% ready and cycled waiting for them. Which option would be better and why? I'm new to Piranha's so which one do you think I would enjoy more?

well i would get rbp first
its fun to see em grow
but one fish could get boring
they are cool but just sorta boring unless theyre huge
but i will more than likely get a rhomb after my rbp

This 55 gallon tank will only house them for about a year. These RBP's are only dime size.

What about the maintenance difference?

IMO Get The Reds . I Myself have a hard time with One fish in a tank it gets boring .

I had a black piranha and I got sick of it . (Grew Too Slow)
The reds you can watch grow and will put on a better feeding frenzy .

What about maintenance for the 5 in a 55gal. How often for water changes and what would be a good diet for these 5 little guys?

Diet should be a mix of A good chiclid stick or pellet (hikari bio gold, Tetra chiclid sticks) Kril or market shirmp, frozen fish fillets (talapia of what ever is cheep at the time. And if you wish add in some live food.

Tank maintenance is not hard as long as you keep up with your water changes. One big 50-65% change a week should be fine as long as you have good filtation. (a good rule of tumb is 10Xs turnover. So a 55gal tank should be in the ballpark of 300gal turnover an hour.) This filtration rate is debatable however if you keep up with the water changes. More water changes less filtration needed

Personally If I ever do another Piranha tank it will be a clean bottom. no sand or gravel. It makes cleaning ALOT faster.

5 in a 55 fr a year should be fine but know this a good well feed RBP with good water can grow 7"+ in one year. then somewhere in the ballpark of an inch a year afte that till they are 10" (rarely over 10" but it does happen)

Also RBPs are pretty messy so the filtration and water changes are top on the list of things to never forget to do.

yea before I upgraded my tank I was running a emporer 350 and a 400, im not sure what the 250 turns over but the 400 turns over like 400 g/per hour so it was like doing 700 g/per hour.
