I have a 740 gallon tank on its way to my house. My question is what would be the best ray to try in a community tank with bala sharks, discus, and possibly some blue acaras. I know that they could end up being the rays snacks at some point in time. Thanks!

I would suggest a smaller rays like histryx ( if you can find them ) and retics as they will not be as likely to eat your fish. Even then it is possible. I would ditch balas and discus and get 2 female and one male motoros to breed because you are fortunate enough to have a large tank and boy we need more hobbyist with means to breed to actually attempt it!
You could add arrowanas as tank mates and have a true montster tank.

Stick with the small rays. A motoro/leopoldi will make a snack out of your toher community fish.
Histrix would be my recommendation. I have kept them with discus and other community fish for years.

I would go with Hystrix too for temperament ( not as aggressive as leos , motoros ) and eventual size.
That is the downside. Possibly the most common freshwater ray in the world is hard to find.

i disagree with the statements above. I have a motoro in with my discus and i have no problems with the motoro showing any aggression towards the discus. It could be that my discus are 3-6 inchs and my motoro is about 8 inches( disk size). That could be why i havent had any problems yet
You will have problems with your motoro and your discus.
I have had full size 7"+ discus get destroyed by a 13" motoro. Missing a head by morning.

Even worse, ive had 9 inch motoros eat a 10 inch black arowana. Bigger motoros have done damage to big datnoids, killed various geophagus species.
