Im new to all of this, but I want to one day down the road, set up a pool for a shark. Like a 10ft diam. and 3ft tall. But first I wanted to do an 8ft x 4ft x 2.5ft pond? Is there a kind that would work for that plan? I want to know anything and everything I would need to do to make this work. thanks

There is alot that Ive been thinking about like the bamboo shark, banded cat shark, or horn shark. Those where the main ones Ive looked at, but if there is something better for it then I wouldnt mind either.

Well - the 8'x 4' pond would be ok for small species - like the Gray Bamboo(C. griseum) and Coral Catshark (A. marmoratus).

As for the 10' round ponds. Basically are good for catsharks, larger bamboos (whitespotted & brownbanded), Epaulette, & Horns(H. francisci).

what all would I need to get it going?

Well - some good books & magazine articles for research.

- A Poly-pool(such as rubbermaid) which can be found in 300-1000 gallons or small above ground swimming pool about 8-10' diameter.

- A powerful filtration system that includes Sand filter, Refugium, LR sump & Protein Skimmer to help remove the waste materials from the water.

- X-fine or Beach grade sand for the pond.

- and of course - Marine salt for making Salt water along with filtered water.

Also you'll need to set the pond and allow it to stablize (which might take 6 months or more.

You can add most Marine fish to a new tank or pond - after only a month or so cycling period.

For Sharks & Rays - you need to wait several more months (usually at least 6 is recommended) before adding any to a new tank - to allow time for the tank to become fully established. Naturally this is for most home aquaria.
