Hello,

I couldn't tell you what the BEST condition are, because it really matters on each fish. But for my three 4" RBP's they like to eat slices of squid and live little feeder fish from the pet store. The water temp for them ranges between 75-80, more towards the 75 range. I have lights on the tank but rarely will turn them on, but I don't think they mind when they are on. Also I do have some plants in my tank, but they still seem to be in the middle of it in the open, not behind the plants but it is always good to have some spots for them to hide in if they get scared.

Hope that helped a bit,

Christos

Food is largely debated on this forum, I think most people agree on variety. Market shrimp, fillets, plants (yes mine ate plants lol), ect. Feeders are great on occasion if you have a safe place to get them, or you quarantine them. Taking away live food from predators takes part of them away.. If you ask me. 76-78 I would say for temp, but they are fairly hardly and will adapt to 72-80. Like most fish, they love good hiding spots and seem to like real plants. Depending on what you feed them, very frequent water changes may be needed, mainly because of how they tear up food. Most of this is based on your tank size / # of piranhas / filtration.

They usually don't like light, but they can get used to it if you keep it on.

ok well i have 2 rbps and i got them at 3in and put them in a 10gal. after about 4 months i upgraded to a 40gal with a plec. they are now 5in. my water is plain water, no chemicals. i feed a variety of things from freeze dried krill to feeders even sometimes chicken and rarely raw stake as piranhas are baisically the disposals of the amazon. as far as lighting goes i actually tipped my light so it faces away from the tank and put a towel over it to adjust the light. the perfer it darker, theyre more comfortable. if you want your tank brighter there is a chemical that makes the water darker but i try to keep away from chemicals. also, try to get more than one so they can shoal. you can keep neons, plecs, and sometimes crabs and crayfish. mine are housed with a plec and a few neone but ive seen p's with crays and fiddler crabs before and it worked out fine, except for the fact fiddlers are brackish but thats a whole new issue. temp i keep a little warmer than usual around 82. definitley over filter the tank because they carry huge bioloads. as far as decor goes i just have a couple large rocks with live plants next to them. just remember, the brighter the tank the more theyll want to hide. also beware when moving them cus theyll chew through a net and take off your toe easily. put them in a quite place because theyre skiddish and will hurt themselves on the tank wall or on decor. i do 50% every month, i dont have to change the water a lot because the filter is built for a 75gal.

:ROFL:he meant in aquaria

i think i keep my conditions overly good but i have MASSIVE GROWTH QUICK. i do a 50 percent water change once a week with AGED water i age the water in garbage bins in my closet, and ever since ive started doing this my cichlids stop scratching there bellys after a w/c so aging your water and changing it very very often like 3 times a week makes for the most pristine of conditions imo

im doing bascily everything listed in this thread bar the aged water, so hopefully they will grow massive soon then i can put them in the same tank
