I just picked up a free piece of glass thats 47.5"x74" and 3/4" thick. I dont think I can build a tank 48 inches high with that, but can it be cut? Any thoughts??

as long as its not tempered/toughend,get a glass shop to cut it in half, make a really nice 2x2x6.2 tank.or a viewing window for a huge plywood build!
nice find!!

I thought about cutting it. Whats the tallest tank I could build with 3/4" glass? For some reason, I cant get a glass thickness calculator to work. I tried rivermuds and for some reason its not working. Garf doesnt go any higher than 36" w/ glass and plywood...any other calculators out there?

If you have polarized sunglasses look at the glass and turn your head, if it looks funny at all then it is tempered. Another way to check is by looking at the corners of the glass; when a company tempers glass they stamp it.

That's a good thickness to use as the bottom of a tank too. Don't have to worry so much about bowing either way with 3/4" thickness! Great find!

well if it is tempered, how much more added strength is there? can the whole piece be used (48" tall aquarium)?

the glass is also rounded at the corners, it looks like it was a table top at some point. Which could mean it has been tempered. I'll check for etching from the manufacture when I get off work..

Polarized lens (sunglasses, camera lens filter) and a white LCD screen are the easiest way to tell. Sometimes looking through the glass in sunlight will show you. You'll see a bunch of rainbow colored 'stripes' throughout the glass
