So my girlfriend and I have this 30 gallon hex aquarium. I need some ideas on what to do with it, we are kinda getting bored with the current stock. I always prefer a few interesting fish over quantity. I'm cool with even just one fish. I know the shape of the aquarium is terrible, but it fits in our living area nicely in a corner between couches and money is tight so getting another aquarium isn't an option.

Current stock:
1 Red tail shark
1 "tiger" loach (called tiger by LFS, no idea what kind it really is)
1 Synodontis catfish (not sure what type thinking hybrid, I really don't like it, GF does)
10 Tiger barbs (these guys are actually pretty cool, super aggressive)
1 Tiretrack eel (will be keeping this, growing out for my 115 gallon)

And pictures, I am embarrassed to show because they are so bad, but to get idea of size/shape:

So what could I do with this aquarium? I just can't think of anything cool to put in here because of the shape. Maybe paludarium? Brackish with a puffer? Saltwater (used to be SW and came with a skimmer)? I like aggressive/predatory fish but not sure if anything like that could go in there. Open to ANY ideas as long as it isn't too expensive.

Please give me some ideas, I am at a total loss! Usually I have TOO many ideas for my aquariums, but not for this shape.

Thanks in advance!

id say turtle but the footprint is small..maybe a gecko..german blue rams. kribensis, possibly lake Tanganyika shellies.

I like the mudskipper idea, I have always wanted to get some. Are there species that stay small enough?

I like the fish you got, maybee just re-aquascape with some nice driftwood and some Anubias. If the light is strong you could put tall growing vallisneria in the back and some cryptocrynes in the front.

with an odd dimension tank, large fish just make the tank look small... but a well aquascaped tank with lots of small colorfull fish will have a wow factor for anyone who visits your house.

What type of lighting do you have, and how deep is the tank top to bottom?

Exodons would be awesome, always wanted them! I have thought about shell dwellers in the past too. A cool live plant set up would be neat, but I have never kept many live plants. The tank is 23" deep. I don't have a very strong light on it, it came with the tank and is just one 15" 14W "Power-Glo" full spectrum light.

Thanks for all the ideas, keep them comin!
