Firstly I would like to say thanks to all the hard working people that keep this site alive!

I am going to build (my first) outdoor pond/tank and can make it up to 3m x 1.5m x 1m = 4500l ( or 10' x 5' x 3.5' = 1,000 gallons).

I am making the raised tank/pond out of railway sleepers and want to keep salmon or trout or some other type of freshwater fish.

Can anyone help with design ideas!!! I have a green field, blank canvass!!

Your ideas needed, cos I have NO idea about:

Design
Filter
Feed
Fish
Water

Any comments welcome. What would you do with that size of tank/pond?

I will take photos of each stage of the project and post at the end.

I am very happy I found this site.

What shape are you going to make it? You'll want at least one bottom drain and one skimmer. Your returns will need to be positioned such that the water will rotate. I would use 55g drums as filters. You can have a pre-filter, bio, bio and return. You might be able to run both the bottom drain and skimmer into the first pre-filter. A better option would be a filter circuit for the bottom drain and one for the skimmer. There are a lot of options for filtration, but don't be afraid of it.

Many thanks for the advise. I will make it rectangular. There are two large shops near where I live. Should I just go with what they say? How many time per hour should the water be cleaned? I have seen filter that will do 7,000l in one hour. Therefore on a 4,000 tank this should clean the water about 1.75 times per hour. Can you recommend all the specs for the filters? i.e. watt, litres per hour?

What fish would you advise. I was thinking large trout. What is the max size fish for that tank?

I wanted to grow fingerlings to a size that will look nice on the surface that can be hand fed by my you kids.... with all safty measures included of course....

i would bump put the pump, try for about 5x per hour. and for trout you are going to need a lot of current to i would suggest many powerheads

use wave makers fer trout u may als o need to consider a chiller and some methed of oxygenating the water a lot
